Competition rules

1) The Ninth International Competition Valsesia – Musica juniores Prize Monterosa – KAWAI is open to candidates of all nationalities.

2) Participants must send their application form, duly filled in to Associazione Culturale Valsesia Musica - corso Roma , 35 - 13019 Varallo Sesia (VC) Italy within Monday, 12th  May  2008 enclosing  the following documents:

a)       a photocopy of an identity document

b)      certificate of their musical studies (if the candidate takes private lessons, he must enclose a statement from his/her own teacher)

c)       two recent photos (whichever size is admitted) signed on the reverse side

d)      a receipt of payment of the entrance fee  (by postal order/no checks allowed)  addressed to:  Associazione Culturale Valsesia Musica  - corso Roma, 35 - 13019 Varallo Sesia (VC) Italy.

3) Candidates will not be admitted to the contest without the payment of the entrance fee. The amount is non-refundable except for what mentioned at point 10 of these regulations.

4) Before the test, candidates must show documents proving their identity to the secretary of the competition.

5) The decisions of the jury are final and not subject to review or appeal.

6) The jury can decide not to give any reward if they think that no candidate is worthy.

7) All recitals are open to the public.

8) The contest is divided into the following sections:

          Section I: Piano solo, piano duo (four hands)

          Section II: String instruments

 

The sections are divided into the following categories:

 

Category A: candidates born on or after 1st January  1999

Category B: candidates born on or after 1st January  1997 

Category C: candidates born on or after 1st January  1995  

Category D: candidates born on or after 1st January  1992 

Category E: candidates born on or after 1st January  1989

Category F: candidates born on or after 1st January   1985

  

ENTRANCE FEES                                     

Categories  A, B, C      €  40                  Categories  D, E, F     € 50

Piano duo (four hands): all categories  € 50

                  

9) The winners will play free in the award-giving concert. A refusal will involve the cancellation of the award.

10) The organizing committee may cancel one or more categories if there are very few participants. Candidates will be promptly informed and the entrance fee will be refunded.

11) Candidates must fill in the application form listing their program in due order:

12) The participants cannot claim any fee towards producers or transmitters for possible recording or radio or TV transmissions or in disk of their performances at the competition. Participation implies  the tacit consent of the above.

 13) The prize-winners of the “International Competition Valsesia – Musica juniores Prize Monterosa- KAWAI” pledge that in the future they will use the title actually given by the jury. Every  abuse will be legally prosecuted.

14) The jury will be made up of renowned Italian and foreign artists and critics. The members can propose their  students upon notice at the beginning of the competition.

15) For any controversy the Court of Varallo Sesia will be competent.

16) If there is dispute about the interpretation of the regulations, the valid text will be the Italian one.

 

 

Competition Rounds

 

Performance by heart is not compulsory

 

SECTION   I

Category A: a freely chosen programme* maximum time   5 minutes

Category B: a freely chosen programme* maximum time   7 minutes

Category C: a freely chosen programme* maximum time  10 minutes

Category D: a freely chosen programme* maximum time 12 minutes

Category E: a freely chosen programme* maximum time 15 minutes

Category F: a freely chosen programme* maximum time 22 minutes

 

* The pianists (including duos) must play a free – chosen performance of their program on digital piano KAWAI  lasting between 1 and 4 minutes.

 

SECTION   II

Category A: a freely chosen programme maximum time   5 minutes

Category B: a freely chosen programme maximum time   7 minutes

Category C: a freely chosen programme maximum time  10 minutes

Category D: a freely chosen programme maximum time 12 minutes

Category E: a freely chosen programme maximum time 15 minutes

Category F: a freely chosen programme maximum time 22 minutes

 

The Organizing Committee will produce a CD containing public domain compositions for “Suonare News” subscribers. All applicants are advised to include also public domain pieces in their own programs.

 

AWARDS

 

Candidates getting not less than 95/100 points will be awarded 1st Prize Diploma, medal and plate.

Candidates getting not less than 90/100 points will be awarded 2nd Prize Diploma and medal.

Candidates getting not less than 85/100 points will be awarded 3rd Prize Diploma and medal.

Candidates getting not less than 80/100 points will be given a Merit Diploma.

All the remaining candidates will be given an Attendance Certificate.

 

WINNERS’ CONCERT

Piano section:

One digital piano KAWAI CL25  will be awarded by the best overall result** among the First Prize winners of their age categories.

 

String instruments section:

One scholarship of € 1.000 will be awarded by the best overall result** among the First Prize winners of their age categories.

 

** In case two or more  First Prize winners of a section get equal points, the jury may request them a  supplementary play – off round.

 

The First overall of each section must perform in an additional contest round, during the winner concert, for awarding the final prize of € 2.500.

 

 

 

HOW TO REACH  VARALLO SESIA (VC)

  

 

By plane:

Nearest International airports: Milan Malpensa  (from terminals shuttle – service linking the airport with Milan and Novara railway stations) and Milan Linate.

 

By train:

Milan (“Centrale” Railway station) -  Novara - Turin railway line, connection to Varallo Sesia in Novara ( Novara – Varallo Sesia)

 

By bus:

From Milan (departure from “Porta Garibaldi” station, address piazza Freud) daily “Baranzelli” bus to Varallo Sesia.

 

By car:

From Motorway A4 (Milan – Turin) motorway A26 (Voltri – Sempione) turn off in Biandrate for Gravellona Toce. Exit : Romagnano – Ghemme, direction: Varallo Sesia (Valsesia – Mainroad SS 299).
